Gareth Lock
Gareth Lock MSc is the founder of The Human Diver and Human in the System, two organisations built on a single idea: that most unwanted events in diving and other high-risk activities are system failures, not people failures. A former Royal Air Force officer with twenty-five years of aircrew and systems engineering service, he holds an MSc in Human Factors and System Safety from Lund University in Sweden. He was certified with GUE as Tech 2 and CCR 1 with around 800 dives. He hasn’t dived for a couple of years due to medical issues.
For more than a decade he has worked to shift the diving community away from blame and compliance and towards capability and genuine learning. Through courses, immersive simulations, incident analyses, and his book Under Pressure, he brings human factors out of the academic world and into the practical reality of sports, military, and commercial diving operations, from diver to instructor/supervisor.
